Study questions:  Republic Book IV

1.  In Book IV, Socrates turns to the question of how various virtues will be exhibited in the city
he has described.  How does he think wisdom, courage, and temperance will be exhibited?

2.  Now to the heart of the matter:  How does Socrates think justice will be exhibited in this city?
What will justice in the city amount to?

3.  Later in Book IV, Socrates turns back to the individual and the nature of the soul.  How does
he characterize our soul?  How is it analogous to the city he has described?

4.  From here, how does Socrates characterize the nature of justice in the individual?  On this view,
what is it for a person to be just?

5.  Consider Socrates' definition of justice in the individual.  How does this definition answer
Glaucon's challenge regarding the nature of justice as a good?
