Philosophy 103
Study questions: Mill, "Utilitarianism" Chpt. 4
1. In Chpt. 4 Mill takes up the issue of the proof that
the
happiness is the sole intrinsic good.
What "proof" does he develop for
this
claim?
2. One problem for this claim (that Happiness is the sole
intrinsic
good) is that we seem to
value other things (like
virtue)
for their own sake as well. How does Mill address this
problem? Do you think his
response is adequate?
