Study questions:  Hobbes, Leviathan, Chpts. 13, 14, and 15

1.  Hobbes claims that human beings outside of a society or state would be in a constant state
of war.  Why does he think this is true?  What are the main features of our human nature
        that lead to this?

2.  Explain briefly Hobbes' first two laws of nature.

3. When individuals enter into a contract, Hobbes thinks the promise itself (of abiding by it) is
not enough to secure the agreement.  Why not?  What more is needed?
