Study questions: Arendt, Eichmann
in Jerusalem, Chpts. 7-8
1. One of Arendt's concerns in these chapters is to answer the
question, "How did Eichmann and
his conscience
come to terms with his participation in the Final Solution? What
is Arendt's
answer to this question? Do you
find it plausible?
2. Arendt discusses in these chapters the role of the Jewish
Councils in the bureaucracy of the
Final Solution. How does Arendt
judge the members of Jewish Councils who cooperated
with the Nazis? How does she
suggest that they ought to
have reacted? (Note, for example
her discussion of Adam
Czerniakow.] Do you think this judgment is fair? (Consider:
What would you have done in the same
circumstance?)
