Security -- Did You Know . . . ?

"Private" Information

Items you mark as "Private" are only hidden in the specific software you are using at that time. Other software can read the "Private" information you thought was safely hidden. If you want to put sensitive information (credit cards, passwords, etc.) on your PDA, find encryption software that meets your needs. By the way, the password protection in Palm software is considered to be "weak" by some, so you may not want to rely on that to protect sensitive information.

Viruses

PDAs can catch viruses and be harmed by worms and Trojan horses just as computers can. To avoid viruses and possible loss of information:

  • Synchronize regularly to back-up your data or use backup software or hardware.
  • Download software from trusted Web sites only.
  • Turn off beaming to prevent others from sending you software. (This saves battery power, too.)
  • Use a PDA operating system (OS) emulator, like the free POSE for Palm OS, to run new software on your PC. This may help you spot potential problems before installing the software on your PDA.
  • Do not upload software to your personal computer as this can spread viruses.

PalmPower Magazine published an informative article in its May 2001 issue that reviews anti-virus programs. Anti-virus programs to consider include:

  • McAfee Guard Dog for Palm. Runs on PDA and monitors installed applications for suspicious actions. Available with annual subscription to McAfee.com's Wireless Security Center.

  • McAfee VirusScan Wireless. Scans your PDA files for viruses every time you synchronize with your computer. Works with Palm OS, Microsoft's Pocket PC Windows CE, and Symbian EPOC. Available with annual subscription to McAfee.com's Wireless Security Center.

  • PC-cillin for Wireless. Scans for viruses as application software is launched on the PDA and prevents viruses from activating. Versions available for Palm OS, Windows CE, and Symbian EPOC. FREE for now.

  • Symantec AntiVirus for the Palm OS. Scans for viruses and other harmful programs on the PDA. Available from Amazon and probably from other software vendors, too.

  • Other programs may be available from Palm software Web sites.
ZDNet Tech Update has an article titled Block PDA viruses with further information.

Password Start-Up

You can stop people from starting the Palm Desktop (on your computer) by enabling the password startup option.
  • Click on Tools from the top menu bar
  • Click on Options from the drop down menu
  • Click on the Security Tab
  • Check the Require password to access the Palm Desktop data box
  • Finish filling out the proceeding boxes for your password. Make certain it is one you will remember.
Next time you double click on the Palm Icon it will ask you for a password.
