Spanish Empire: Library Reserve
The following is a list of books that I have put on reserve in the university
library for History 360/560. They will be useful for the development of your
project bibliography and for gaining an orientation to the demands of your
project. In order to evaluate the value of books that appear useful for your
research, you should consult book reviews in major scholarly journals. I have
provided a list of some of the scholarly journals in
the Eli M. Oboler Library of Idaho State University.
Reserve Books (organized by title)
- Action and Its Environments, by Jeffrey C. Alexander.
- Cambridge History of China, vol. 7, pt. 1.
- Cambridge History of Iran, vol. 6.
- Cambridge History of Japan, vol. 4.
- Cambridge History of Latin America, vols. 1 and 2.
- Cambridge History of Southeast Asia, vol. 1.
- Colonial Latin America, by M. A. Burkholder and L. L.
Johnson.
- First Imperial Age: European Overseas Expansion c.
1400-1745, by G. V. Scammell.
- Foundations of the Portuguese Empire, by B. Diffie and G.
Winius.
- History of Islamic Societies, by I. M. Lapidus.
- History of Latin America, by P. Bakewell.
- History of the African People, by R. W. July.
- Latin America: A Concise Interpretive History, by E.
Bradford Burns.
- Portuguese in India, by M. N. Pearson.
- Spain and Portugal in the New World, by L. N. McAlister.
- World Encompassed: The First European Maritime Empires c.
800-1650, by G. V. Scammell.
- World on the Move: The Portuguese in Africa, Asia, and America,
1415-1808, by A. J. R. Russell-Wood.
Although the library has the following valuable works, I have not put the
relevant volumes on reserve because they are a bit too dated to be completely
useful for purposes of bibliographic work or orientation: the Cambridge
History of Africa, the Cambridge History of Islam, and the
UNESCO General History of Africa.
