Metadata

Metadata is information about data that facilitates its organization, discovery, and use. In order for metadata to serve these functions, those producing data must adhere to standards, and many of the following links relate to this issue.

The Metadata Clearinghouse of the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative, part of the TimeMap Project of the Archaeological Computing Laboratory of the University of Sydney.

http://purl.org/DC/index.htm
Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. The DC attempts to create metadata standards that will facilitate the discovery of electronic resources. It is the standard followed by ECAI, the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (www.ecai.org).

This site provides an excellent Matadata FAQ, as well as a number of useful downloadable files relating to metadata standards and research. The FAQ shows both the Core elements of the draft International Standard (IS) 19115 and the elements of the Dublic Core (DC).

Technical Committee 211, on geo-spatial information, of the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO). Among other things, ISOTC211 is developing the metadata standards document known as IS 19115, which is now in final discussion before its publication. ISO standards can be purchased at http://www.iso.ch/infoe/catinfo.html.
