Responsibilities are to:

Identify English language and cultural awareness needs of
in-coming, new and continuing ISU students enrolled in academic and professional
programs for whom English is not the primary language;

Develop/ provide workshops, resources, for-credit classes,
and tutoring sessions to meet these needs;
-
Develop training opportunities in language and cultural issues
for tutors, clinicians, interested students, staff and faculty members
to acquaint them with ESOL issues, and familiarize them with effective,
culturally appropriate strategies, materials and approaches;

Serve in tandem with all ISU colleges, departments,
committees, task forces and offices who seek to recruit and retain a diverse
student body and to foster international exchanges and cooperative projects;

Work with Idaho's schools, colleges and community organizations
to anticipate the needs of incoming students for whom English is
not the primary language, and assist them in a successful transition into
academic and professional programs;

Develop customized English language and cultural awareness
programs for special groups;

Develop customized programs in English for Specific Purposes
(ESP);

Provide assessments and work in support of the English language
and cultural awareness needs of the International Teaching Assistants at
Idaho State University;

Provide support for Visiting Scholars where appropriate.

About the Director:
Lynn Leonard holds degrees and certificates from Southern Illinois University
(Carbondale, Illinois); University of Ibadan (Ibadan, Nigeria); University
of Oslo (Oslo, Norway); University of London (London, England); Boston
College (Boston, MA); School for Teaching English as a Second Language
(Seattle University, Seattle, WA).

She has taught English and American Culture in Spain, Nigeria
and the United States, as well as courses in Speech, Theatre Arts,
Acting, Interpersonal Communication, Introduction to University Writing
and Speaking, and First Year Seminar. She has developed Adult
Education, Community Education, Continuing Education and Conference programs.
Designing instruction for adults has been her major focus, although she
has also developed educational opportunities for children and teens.

Since becoming the Director of ESL/ESOL at Idaho State Univeristy
in 1992 she has developed a program that serves students across the entire
university regardless of official status: international students, US citizens,
permanent residents, refugees , visiting scholars, faculty and staff members.

Ms Leonard has developed and taught customized programs
in English language and American culture for special groups, such as
trainees from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China
on Taiwan and graduate students from Russia participating in a special
Dept. of Energy project in Nuclear Engineering. She has developed writing
workshops for Spanish language participants in the Idaho Migrant Council
Child Development Associates/Certification program (under the direction
of Dr. Sally Pena in the ISU College of Education), and summer tutoring
for doctoral student cohorts from Taiwan in the College of Education. Recently
she has worked with Betty Jo Willey, instructor in the College of Education,
and Sue Akersten, ESOL Program Assistant, to develop a pilot one to one
project matching 44 future Idaho teachers in EDUC 204 (Family, Community
and Culture) with 44 international students for discussion and cultural
exchange.

Ms. Leonard was awarded "Outstanding Teacher" by Vorhees
College, Denmark, South Carolina, and has received an Innovative Teaching
Grant from the ISU Center for Teaching and Learning for new program development.
