Math 257 – Kriloff
Project 2 - Graph Review
Choose two graphs of any type from a newspaper, magazine, or web site.
One should be an example of a graph that is confusing, misleading, and/or
mathematically incorrect. The other should be an example of a graph
that is clear, helpful, and/or mathematically correct and consistent.
-
Write no more than one page explaining in detail the features of each graph
that illustrate the characteristics mentioned above. Include precise
descriptions of and statements about those features.
-
State 2 or 3 poor features of the first graph and 2 or 3 good features
of the second graph, in each case including at least one observation that
is of a different type than a point made in class or in your text.
-
Include in your discussion at least 1 mathematical conclusion you can draw
from the data given in each graph. Conclusions should involve specific,
detailed mathematical calculations or comparisons.
-
Give precise references for the source(s) of your graphs, and include either
the original graph or a clear photocopy with your review.
Your grade will be based mainly on content (i.e. the depth and originality
of the points you make, explanations you give, and conclusions you draw).
Keep in mind that the content conveyed is influenced strongly by the quality
of the writing, which includes organization, clarity, sentence structure,
spelling, and grammar. Your grade will also depend on following the
guidelines given above.
