Project 1 – Graph Review

Choose a graph from a newspaper, magazine, or web site (any type is acceptable).

For your chosen graph, write a “graph review” (like a book review) of no more than one page.  Include precise descriptions of and statements about those characteristics of the graph that you consider good (e.g. clear, helpful, mathematically correct, etc.) and bad (e.g. confusing, deceptive, mathematically incorrect, etc.).  As a rough guide, aim for 2-3 good points and 2-3 bad points, and aim for at least one of each that is different than a point made in class or in your text.

Include in your discussion at least 2 mathematical conclusions you could draw from the data given in the graph.

Provide a recommendation on the overall quality of the graph, include a precise reference for the source of your graph, and include either the original graph or a clear photocopy with your review.

Your grade will be based primarily on content (i.e. the soundness and depth of the points you make and conclusions you draw) and somewhat on style (i.e. clarity of writing and explanations).

Due Date: Friday, February 8, 2002.
