Exercise Sets
Try these problems before we discuss the section in class.
If completely stuck or very uncertain, try the problem solving strategies
on p.2 or steps on p.10 or work a similar problem with an answer in the
back. If still stuck or uncertain, add the problem to a list of questions
to ask in class or office hours. Much of class time will be spent
on questions you have about these problems.
Even though these will not be graded, write up complete, organized
final solutions as if they were. This will improve your submitted
homework and will be helpful to refer back to when studying for exams.
Chapter 8
We will work on some ideas from Chapter 8 during the course because this chapter was not covered in either section of Math 157 last spring, although it is intended to be part of that course, not of Math 257. We do not have time to cover Chapter 8 in full, so it will be your responsibility to work on it until you understand it. I am happy to answer questions about anything from the text during office hours.
Here is how we will deal with the parts of Chapter 8:
8.1 - Arithmetic of Terminating Decimals
I will assume you already know how to perform arithmetic with terminating
decimals by hand or that you can learn it from this section on your own.
We will probably not use this skill explicitly but it is something you
could be called on to teach to future students.
8.2 - Percent and Scientific Notation
We will be using these ideas primarily in Chapters 9 and 10.
I will introduce them as in 8.2 and refer you to read that section and
try some problems.
8.3 - Interest
I am assuming you know this topic from Math 143.
8.4 - The Family of Decimals
We will review rounding in 9.1 and you will be expected to round correctly
throughout the course. We will probably briefly discuss the family
of decimals at the same time.
8.5 - Real Numbers, Pi, and Square Roots
We will touch on real and irrational numbers when discussing the family
of decimals. We will motivate the real number pi when discussing
measurement involving circles in 12.2.
