Addendum to Course Information and Homework
Calculus I, Math 170 - Section 2

An important component of the grading process accidentally omitted from the Course Information page:

In order to earn a grade of C- or better in Math 170, you must show proficiency in the techniques of differentiation by passing a Mastery Test. This test will consist of 8 straightforward differentiation exercises and will be given in class likely during the week of 2/24-2/28. In order to pass the Mastery Test, you must work 7 of the 8 problems perfectly. You may repeat the test as often as necessary after correcting all errors from the previous attempt (a different version will be given each time). Repeat tests will be given by arrangement with me at a time outside of class mutually convenient to as many students who have not passed the test as possible. If you have not passed the Mastery Test by May 9, the highest grade you can earn in the course is a D+, regardless of your exam and quiz grades.

Suggestions on Homework

Try the problems listed below before the class for which the section is scheduled.
The brief answers in the back of the text are NOT acceptable as complete solutions and should be consulted only after you have completed the problem yourself for maximum benefit.
Write up complete clear solutions on your own in order to be ready for the quizzes in class.
Make a list of questions you still have and ask these during class, office hours, the SI session, or at the Math Center.
Practice extra even-numbered problems to prepare for the exams, especially for harder problems.
Learn to check your work, possibly using your calculator. Do not become dependent on the calculator, especially for routine calculations that can be done more quickly by hand. Remember, a correct answer with no supporting work on quizzes or exams will result in no or almost no credit.
Other good problems include applications and more theoretical problems for math majors.
Quiz problems will either ask you to write a definition of a key term or will be taken directly from the list of strongly suggested problems below. Notice 3 quizzes cover two sections.
Sections 6.2 and 6.3 will be due as homework on the dates shown.
