Brief Calculus, Math 160, Kriloff
Chapter 1 Sample Exam
The first exam will cover Sections 1.1-1.11, Fitting Formulas to Data,
and Compound Interest and the Number e. There is a copy of a previous
exam on reserve at the library. This does not imply that your
exam will closely resemble the old exam. Notice that the last two
sections are not represented on the old exam. Many, but not all,
of the problems will be of the following possible types:
-
one of the Review Problems for Chapter 1,
-
a modification of one of the Review Problems for Chapter 1, or
-
a short computational problem along the lines of those included in Section
1.5, 1.8, 1.9, etc.
The best way to prepare for an exam is to actually take one under
the same circumstances as the real thing, just as musicians do dress
rehearsals, football players play scrimmages, and athletes in general train
under conditions similar to those they will play in, compete in, etc.
-
Use the old exam, or compile an exam by selecting a few questions below,
writing out the problems on slips of paper, and shuffling the papers.
-
Take the exam with a time limit of about 50 minutes with no books or notes
available and no distractions. (Your exam will be shorter
than the old exam.)
-
Study further the material you had difficulty with and analyze your test
taking strategies using the handout. (Use problems not assigned as
homework or other review problems for extra practice.)
-
Take a second sample exam in the same way and work on improvement.
The following groups of problems share a common characteristic (can you
identify what each is?) so I am not likely to include more than 1 from
any group. Again, notice the last two sections are not represented.
