THOM RITTER GEORGE

Frequently Asked Questions about Rentals

RENTALS

    Q:  How do rentals work?

A:  Large ensemble pieces (orchestra, band) under copyright are often available only through the rental of performance materials.  While rentals are available both from publishers and composers, the rental procedures are the same.  The first step is to contact the copyright holder (publisher or composer).  The organization or person responsible for the rental pays a fee for the use of the performance materials and shipping.  Rental materials should be returned within three working days following the performance.

Q:  How long do I have to rehearse the rental music?

A:  Normally, four weeks prior to the performance.  Contact the copyright holder is additional time is needed.

Q:  What materials do I get for the performance?

A:  For orchestra pieces, what will be sent is one full score, wind and percussion parts, and sufficient string parts to provide for a full orchestra performance.  For band and wind ensemble pieces, what will be sent is one full score and wind and percussion parts for a full wind performance.  If additional parts are needed, these should be requested when arranging the rental.

Q:  What about markings in the score and parts?

A:  String bowings in Thom Ritter George's orchestra music are already printed in the parts.  Parts should only be marked in soft, black pencil.  Parts should not be marked in ink or colored pencil.  Markings by the performance organization should be erased before returning the materials.

Q:  What information do I need to supply when setting up a rental?

A:  There are four items you will have to supply -

            1.  The date of your performance.  If you are performing the
music more than once, give all dates.  Example:
                    April 28, 2008
                    April 29, 2008

            2.  Name of the conductor and solo artist.  Example:

                    Samuel Midman, Euphonium

            3.  Name and address of the person or organization to whom the
                music is rented.  Example:
                    XYZ Philharmonic
                    8201 Front Street
                    Amarack, NY  11202
                    U.S.A.

            4.  Name and address of the person or organization who will be
paying for the rented music.  Example:
