Thom Ritter George

ARIA AND DANCE, CN 263 (1970)
For Solo Tenor Trombone and Four-Part Trombone Choir

PROGRAM NOTES

Thom Ritter George's ARIA AND DANCE was composed February-March 1970 and bears the dedication "For Emory Remington."  The piece ws written as a special surprise for Mr. Remington, the manuscript being presented to him in March 1970.  The work is scored for solo tenor trombone accompanied by four-part trombone choir.

The ARIA is marked "Andante" and is somber in tone.  The solo tenor trombone is featured with a song-like melody against the dark chords of the trombone choir.

In contrast, the DANCE, marked "Vivace e giocoso," is fast and employs extensive changing meters to heighten rhythmic drive.  The music is written in three part song form with a coda.  The high solo trombone passage at the end is of special interest.

ARIA AND DANCE was the winning work in the 1974 Ensemble Composition Contest sponsored by the International Trombone Association.
