Representative beetle pathways on the prairie dog town and adjacent grassland. There were few obstacles on the prairie dog town to deflect the directed movements of beetles.  The 2 beetles were followed for 100 5 sec. steps.  The beetle on the prairie dog town moved 2 times as far (1517 cm vs. 741 cm), had a net displacement almost 6 times as far (926 cm vs. 157 cm), and its pathway fractal dimension was more linear (D = 1.12 vs. 1.36) than the beetle tracked on the grassland habitat, respectively.

Beetle pathway on the adjacent grassland. This beetle pathway is the result of avoiding clumps of grass forcing convoluted movement.
