Residency Sites

Residencies currently offered in Boise include Idaho Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency, and residencies in Pharmacy: Family Practice Residency Primary Care, Geriatrics, Rural Ambulatory Primary Care, Adult Medicine, Psychopharmacy.

Pocatello residencies include the Idaho Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency, Family Medicine and the following Pharmacy residencies: Ambulatory Care, Drug Information, Drug Utilization and Family Medicine.

Boise is the capital city and the largest metropolitan area in Idaho. About 260,000 people reside in the Boise metro area. It is known as the “City of Trees” and is transected by the Boise River and a greenbelt that includes a walking and biking path throughout the city.

Pocatello is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The city of about 52,000 is located within a three-hour drive of, Sun Valley, Jackson Hole and the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

Idaho Advanced Education in General Dentistry

The Idaho Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency operates from two clinical training sites, one in Pocatello and one in Boise.

The goal of the program includes increasing the knowledge and clinical skills of the general dentist beyond that achieved in the pre-doctoral education.

Family Medicine Residency

Jonathan Cree, MD

Whether delivering C-sections, utilizing advanced endoscopic techniques or performing ventilator management of comatose patients in ICU, this unique program prepares you for the multidisciplined expertise required for rural family practice.

Since our residency accepts only a limited number of applicants, each resident receives personal hands-on experience working directly with practicing specialists.

The ISU Family Medicine Residency's mission is to train physicians for successful rural family practice. The three-year program is a community-based, University-affiliated program,* designed to produce skilled, caring family practice physicians. The Residency trains 15 residents each year and is fully accredited by the ACGME. It is affiliated with the Portneuf Medical Center, which serves Pocatello and the surrounding communities.

The Family Medicine Residency provides a broad range of practice settings utilizing our busy local community hospital, university teaching hospitals for pediatrics, migrant farm worker outreach clinics, health department and affiliated rural family physician offices.

Residents in the Family Medicine Residency have the opportunity to participate a hands-on curriculum with plenty of procedures:

Pharmacy Primary Care Residency *

Barbara Mason, Pharm.D., FASHP

The specialty residency with the Ambulatory Care Service at the Boise VA is designed to train pharmacy practitioners in all major aspects of pharmaceutical services in a VA hospital, with emphasis on the clinical practice of pharmacy in the ambulatory care setting. The successful candidate will gain experience in, but not limited to:

The program conforms to the most current learning objectives for residency training in Primary Care published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Geriatric Pharmacy Practice *

Sandra G. Jue, Pharm.D., FASHP

The Geriatric Pharmacy Practice residency, located at the Boise VA, is designed to develop skills to become an effective didactic and clinical educator, skilled clinician and scholar to benefit the elderly population.

Psychopharmacy Practice

Rex S. Lott, Pharm.D.

The Psychopharmacy Residency Program is designed to train pharmacy practitioners in all major aspects of pharmaceutical psychopharmacy practice.

The resident will gain experience in:

The residency is located at the Psychiatry Department at the Boise VA with a 15-bed acute inpatient unit, a four-bed extended stay program for PTSD and a residential substance abuse treatment program.

Pharmacy Rural Ambulatory Primary Care

Roger Hefflinger, Pharm.D.

This residency is designed to place residents into a rotational setting of introduction, and then provide a longitudinal exposure during the second-half of the year.

The resident’s 2,000 hours of instruction include:

Adult Medicine Pharmacy Practice

Karl Madaras-Kelly, Pharm.D.

Held at the Boise VAMC, this residency is designed for residents who desire involvement in providing comprehensive clinical pharmacy services and management of institutional drug distribution to adult medicine patients. Working at both the Boise VA and St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, the resident will gain knowledge in areas including:

Drug Information Residency

Catherine Heyneman, Pharm.D., MS

The Idaho State University College of Pharmacy offers a one-year residency in Drug Information in Pocatello. The successful candidate will gain experience in:

The site provides pharmaceutical care consults and drug information to physicians, pharmacists and laypersons throughout the State of Idaho.

Family Medicine/Primary Care

Rex W. Force, Pharm.D., BCPS, FCCP

The resident provides inpatient and ambulatory care clinical pharmacy services to a Department of Family Medicine, Pocatello, that trains family physicians. Resident will gain experience in primary care pharmacy services including:
