Outdoor Life Magazine has ranked Pocatello for three years in a row as one of the top five destinations in the United States for access to outdoors activities.
When it comes to outdoor recreation—hiking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, cross country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, disc golfing, horseback riding and more—Southeast Idaho is truly at the center of the universe.
Starting in 2010, thanks to partnerships between the Idaho State University Veterans’ Sanctuary, the nationally recognized Outdoor Adventure Center and Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group (CW HOG), Idaho Fish and Game and local outdoors shops, our student veterans will have top-notch opportunities to enjoy this incredible resource with their peers. We are planning multiple outings this school year to kick-off this exciting new project, the Veterans’ Outdoor Experience.
They include a fly fishing workshop from a professional guide who will teach the basics of casting, followed by a guided fishing trip on Idaho’s world-class South Fork of the Snake River, which is home to trophy brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout. There will be a cross country skiing workshop followed by a trip to awe-inspiring Harriman State Park near Yellowstone for a weekend of adventures in the snowy backcountry. We’ll wrap up the year with a weeklong whitewater rafting excursion on Utah’s Green River.
The cost of these activities, the dates of which are currently being planned, will be very reasonable, and the Sanctuary will raise funds to help offset the expense as much as possible.
