Eligibility Criteria
Minimum of 90 aggregate days of active duty service on or after 9/11/2001, and are still on active duty or were -
- Honorably discharged.
- Discharged for a service connected disability after serving 30 continuous days.
- For all other discharge and release conditions check the VA web site for eligibility.
Approved Programs
- VA approved programs taught only at a College or University.
- Entire online and Distance Learning Programs - will pay tuition and fees only.
- License or Certification Test - one time payment not to exceed the cost of the test or $2,000.
- Tutorial Assistance - will pay up to $100 a month, not to exceed $1,200.

Entitlement
- Generally 36 months of education benefits.
- If you are eligible for more than one VA education program, then you are limited to a maximum of 48 months of benefits.
- Will remain eligible for 15 years from date of last discharge or release from active duty.
- If transferring from Montgomery GI Bill to Post-9/11 GI Bill, then only the remaining entitlement on MGIB will transfer.
Veteran Payments
All payments are based on eligibility percentage. If you are not eligible for 100%, then only the % you are entitled to will be paid.
- Tuition and Fees - will be paid up to the highest cost of in-state, undergraduate tuition.
- Monthly Housing allowance - equal
to BAH for an E-5 with dependents, based on the school's zip code. (Must be enrolled
more than 1/2 time)
*Calculate your BAH - Book Stipend - up to a maximum of $1000 a year based on enrollment. ($41.67 per credit, must be enrolled more than 1/2 time)
Active Duty Payments
- Tuition and Fees Only
Prior MGIB Eligibility
- Individuals transferring entitlements will have a proportional amount of their basic $1,200 contribution refunded in the last BAH payment when entitlement exhausts.
- If you do not exhaust the entitlement you will not receive a refund.
- If you participated in the $600 buy-up under MGIB or REAP you will not receive that additional benefit under the Post-9/11 nor receive a refund.
- If you are eligible for Navy, Army, or Marine Corps College Fund under MGIB you may receive your college fund the same as before, unless you are attending classes less than half-time.
