Affluenza Essay Content
Contest Rules & Guidelines
Five $100 ASISU awards will be given to essay contest winners.
Essay must reflect a reading of Affluenza by John de Graaf, David Wann and Thomas H. Naylor.
FT degree seeking students enrolled as of Fall 2007 semester may submit an original essay.
Submit an original essay on one of the topics below:
- Identify one symptom of Affluenza as described in the book that you find in your hometown or in Pocatello. Develop one strategy you or your community could undertake to counteract this symptom and tie your essay into your reading of Affluenza.
- Pick a particular ad you dislike on tv, radio, or in print. Describe the ad and why you dislike it. Create an anti-ad against it. For an example of anti-ads see chapter 27. Turn in an electronic or printed copy of the ad with your description.
- In capitalism as currently practiced, we are encouraged to view others as competitors. Does this limit our inclination to wish them success – both as individuals and economic entities? If so, what adjustments can we make to have a more compassionate economy? Tie your essay into your reading of Affluenza.
Essay must be typed, using a standard 10 or 12 point font, double-spaced, with 1" margins.
Essay may not exceed 1,200 words.
Attach a cover page to the essay hard copy that includes the following information:
- Student Name
- Bengal ID Number
- Class Standing
- E-mail address
- Phone number
