Could I be a writing tutor?
The Writing Center maintains a staff of 15-20 consultants between our Pocatello and Idaho Falls campuses, and our consultants include undergraduate and graduate students from across the disciplines.
Most writing tutors work 4-8 hours per week, although some choose to work fewer hours. Scheduling is based on individual tutor availability and program needs.
We are now hiring for Fall 2013. These positions are filled competitively, but all applicants should have at least sophomore standing, a minimum 3.5 GPA, and a B+ or better in ENGL 102.
Other pluses include grades of B+ or better in PHIL 101 and/or ENGL 301; successful completion of writing-intensive coursework in areas other than English; previous writing center experience; and work-study funding. Students majoring in business and the sciences are especially encouraged to apply.
Once hired, writing tutors will complete the CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certification requirements by reading and discussing several articles about tutoring; by observing other tutors at work; and by participating in writing tutor training workshops. Two levels of certification are available.
If you are interested in becoming a writing tutor, please fill out the form found here and return it to the writing center with a copy of your transcript and a short (3-5 page) sample of your writing.
