Route Finding Caution:
The ski route to the yurt goes across rolling wheat field country. During times of poor visibility, it can be very difficult to locate the yurt. You and other members of your party should take a couple of day trips prior to your planned use of the yurt to make sure it can be located. For more information on these trails contact the ISU Outdoor Program 282-3912.

Starting Point:
Park at the large plowed parking at the intersection of McKee and Rapid Creek Road. To reach it, drive north from Inkom for 11 miles on the Rapid Creek Road. Please park in the lot and not on the road.

Route Description: (Refer to map.)

From the Rapid Creek parking area, walk across the road to the grain bins on the east side of the road. Start skiing just before the bins following a small road which climbs steeply to the upper wheat fields. After this short steep climb, the skiing becomes easier as you travel across the rolling wheat fields.

Ski to the east, keeping alongside a small drainage (Syringa Creek) which will be to your right (south) when first reaching the upper wheat fields. Syringa Creeek is dry in the winter and forms only a slight depression as it cuts across the wheat fields. Continue gradually climbing across the open fields, all the time keeping Syringa Creek to the right. Approximately 2 miles from the parking area, the Syringal Creek drainage begins to deepen slightly and a small ridge forms. You should stay on the ridge, continuing to keep Syringa Creek to the right. There's an old road that runs along the top of the ridge.

Within a short distance after gaining the road, watch for a small opening in the aspens lining Syringa Creek. Drop down, then cross the dry Syringa Creek bed and climb up through the opening until reaching the yurt. The yurt is located 600 feet from the road. (Note: If you follow the old road to the point where it ends in an open area (at 6200') which overlooks the surrounding country, you've gone too far. Backtrack 400 feet and watch for the opening in the trees along Syringa Creek. As with all yurts, you should learn the route before attempting it with a group.

Special Note:
This yurt is possible because of the generosity of private land owners. Please be sure to pick up all litter and otherwise treat the land with respect. Because the snow around the yurt is melted for drinking water, dogs are discouraged.

Warning:
Winter travel and the use of yurts are dangerous. Do not undertake yurt trips without careful preparation and a serious discussion of the dangers with ALL members of your group.
