McNabb Yurt
Main Route to Yurt: McNabb Creek and adjoining ridges.

Difficulty: Advanced. (Note: This route is exposed and can become extremely difficult to find during periods of poor visibility. Do not be afraid to turn around in bad weather conditions.)

Elevation and Distance: 2400 feet climb over 4 miles.

Avalanche Potential: Avalanche potential exists. Crossing steep slopes is dangerous. Avalanche transceivers and knowledge of safe avalanche route finding is highly recommended for this tour.

Special Equipment and Needs: All members of the party should have climbing skins, avalanche transceivers and shovels. Because the snow around the yurt is melted for drinking water, dogs are discouraged.

Maps Needed: USGS Topographic, 7.5 Minute series "South Putnam."  (This map is for reference only. Skiers should use original U.S.G.S. quad maps while on Yurt tours.) Contact the ISU Outdoor Program for more route details. 282-3912

GPS UTM Coordinates:
Trailhead: 12 T 0399421 4747946
Corrals: 12 T 0401240 4748972
McNabb Saddle: 12 T 0404183 4749694
McNabb Yurt: 12 T 0404279 4749805

Starting Point:
End of plowed portion of McNabb Road. McNabb Road can be reached by driving 7 miles out of Inkom on Rapid Creek Road. Turn right onto McNabb Road and drive to the end of the road. Be sure to parallel park in the designated area about 100 feet from the end of the road. Vehicles parked in the turn-around area or in front of the private drives will be ticketed.

Buckbrush Ridge Route:
Follow the snowbound McNabb Road to the sheep corrals. From the corrals climb onto Buckbrush Ridge which is off to your left (north). Staying on top of the ridge, work your way up until you are located just below the cliff band on face of McNabb Point (7902). From the cliff band, contour around McNabb Point to your left (north) or traverse to the saddle. The yurt is located in a patch of conifers, 600 feet northeast of the Saddle.

Canyon Route:
Follow the snowbound road past the corrals and stay in the drainage until you get to the end of the canyon. Climb up to the ridge on the left and access the ridge. You can go across to the saddle or around to the north as described above.

Middle Ridge Route:
Follow the snowbound McNabb Road to the sheep corrals. Continue skiing along McNabb Creek for another 1/2 mile until you reach a prominent ridge off to the right (south). Follow this ridge up until it meets the main ridge (Juniper Ridge) on the south side of McNabb Creek. These ridges meet at the bottom of the Francis Face. Traverse up the face until you are above the fir trees. At this point, traverse to McNabb Saddle, which is located between McNabb Point (7902) and Francis Point (7956). Once in the saddle, you'll find the yurt located 600 feet to the northeast in a patch of conifers. Make sure you don't drop into Webb Canyon which is southeast of the saddle.

Juniper Ridge Route:
Follow the snowbound road to the sheep corrals. From the corrals, ski southwest to the top of Juniper Ridge, which is the main ridge to the right (south) of McNabb Creek. Follow this ridge until it becomes a part of the Francis Face. Traverse up the face as described for the Middle Ridge Route above.

Warning:
Winter travel and the use of yurts are dangerous. Do not undertake yurt trips without careful preparation and a serious discussion of the dangers with ALL members of your group.
