Jackson Creek Yurt
Difficulty: Advanced Intermediate to Advanced. (Note: This route is exposed and can become extremely difficult to find during periods of poor visibility and variable snow conditions.)

Avalanche Potential: Avalanche potential exists. Crossing steep slopes is dangerous. Avalanche transceivers and knowledge of safe avalanche route finding is highly recommended for this tour.

Special Equipment and Needs: Avalanche transceivers, skins, and portable snow shovel should be carried by each skier . Because the snow around the yurt is melted for drinking water, dogs are discouraged.

Maps Needed: USGS Topographic, 7.5 Minute series "Bonneville Peak."  (This map is for reference only. Skiers should use original U.S.G.S. quad maps while on Yurt tours.) Contact the ISU Outdoor Program for more route details. 282-3912

GPS UTM Coordinates:
Inkom Pass: 12 T 0406781 4739608
Jackson Creek Yurt: 12 T 0406428 4739163

Jackson Creek Ridge Route:
Elevation Gain and Distance: 2300 feet over 3 1/2 miles
Start: From Inkom, drive out Rapid Creek Road for one mile and turn right onto the Inkom Road then left onto Jackson Creek Road. Approximately 3 miles east of Inkom, the road takes a sharp right turn and crosses over Jackson Creek. Park just before the curve on the north side of the road (by the gate).
Route: Follow the jeep road to the east for about 1 mile. The road will drop off the farm fields into Jackson Creek drainage. Follow Jackson Creek for another 1/2 mile until coming to a small drainage (Glory Bee Gulch) entering from the left (north). Immediately after the drainage climb onto the ridge which separates this drainage from the Jackson Creek drainage. Climb up the ridge until reaching a flat area overlooking the valley (Redtail Point 7210). From this area, the fence line will disappear. Contour to the south, staying at the same elevation. The yurt is located in a grove of aspens a hundred yards beyond the fence.

Glory Bee Gulch Route:
Elevation Gain and Distance: 2300 feet over 3 1/2 miles
Start: Jackson Creek Road. (see description above)
Route: Follow the instructions for Jackson Creek Ridge, instead of following the ridge, turn and climb up the little drainage to the north (Glory Bee Gulch). The gulch will bring you up to Redtail Point. Continue on as described above from Redtail Point.

Pebble Creek Ski Area to Inkom Pass Route:
Elevation Gain and Distance: 600 feet over 2 miles
Start: Pebble Creek Ski Area. (You need to purchase a one ride lift ticket.)
Route: Follow signs from the town of Inkom to Pebble Creek Ski Area. Buy a lift ticket and take the chair to the top. From the top of the lift, ski over to Green Canyon. At Upper Green Canyon put skins on your skis and traverse Green Canyon until you reach the main Bonneville ridgeline. Head north along the top of the ridge towards Inkom Pass. The yurt is located approximately 1/4 mile south of Inkom Pass. Caution. During times of bad weather the Bonnevill Ridge is exposed to high winds and visibility can become non-existant. Even experienced skiers familiar with the Bonneville Ridge have gotten off route. If you choose this route, use extreme caution.

Warning:
Winter travel and the use of yurts are dangerous. Do not undertake yurt trips without careful preparation and a serious discussion of the dangers with ALL members of your group.
