HPV Vaccine (cervical cancer vaccine)

This vaccine protects again four types of Human Papilloma (HPV). Men and women are exposed to this virus through sexual intercourse. In women, these viruses are the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. The vaccine has been shown to prevent about 95% of cervical cancer and 99% of genital warts in women.

HPV vaccine is recommended for men and women 9 to 26 years old. For those older than 26 years of age, we recommend a discussion of the vaccine with your health care provider.

The vaccine does not protect against any other sexually transmitted infection such as HIV, gonorrhea, or syphilis; however recent studies suggest it helps protect against some of the other strains of HPV. It is still necessary to have regular Pap smears even after vaccination.

The vaccine consists of 3 doses: first dose, second dose at 2 months, and third dose at 6 months. The entire series is needed in order to be effective.

Cost: Approximately $150 per dose. Some insurance plans cover the vaccine, some do not. The vaccine must be paid for at the time it is given.
