From the Ground Up: Building a Culture of Assessment in Student Affairs Tuesday, May 20, 2008

A One-Day Workshop for NASPA Region V, at Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID, with remote locations at the College of Southern Nevada and Central Washington University

This workshop will focus on building an assessment culture in a Division of Student Affairs. In particular, the workshop will present an overview of assessment and the assessment process in a division of student affairs. Specific aspects of assessment work in Student Affairs will be focused upon in more depth throughout the workshop. These include: developing and refining learning outcomes, building buy-in, use of mapping techniques, and issues involved in collaborating with academic programs and faculty. The workshop will be lead by Rebecca Sanderson, Ph.D., Director of Student Affairs Research and Evaluation, Oregon State University.

The workshop will be from 9:00am – 12:30pm and 1:15pm – 4:30pm (times are one hour earlier for Pacific time) with 45 minutes for lunch.

Tentative Schedule:

9:00-10:00am Overview of Assessment focused on assessment of Student Learning
10:00-11:15am Creating Buy-In within Student Affairs and with Partners
11:15-12:30pm Assessment Planning Elements
12:30-1:15pm Lunch Break on Your Own
1:15-3:00pm Continue with Assessment Planning Elements including Mapping as a Tool to Plan, Examine, and Communicate the Student Affairs Curriculum, and Closing the Assessment Loop
3:00-4:00pm Leading, Lagging and Language—Working with Academic Programs and Faculty
4:00-4:30pm Questions, Discussion, Feedback on the Day
