Exploration and Investment
The nine learning dimensions in this IDEA activity planner are divided
into two levels of involvement, Exploration and Investment,
to help you select activities that best fit your educational commitments,
needs, and desires. These levels differentiate the degree of personal
commitment required to fully benefit from the experience.
Exploration activities are typically:
- One time events spanning an hour, an evening or a day
- Opportunities to sample what a subject, event, activity or organization
has to offer
Exploration activities help you discover new interests in a particular
subject matter, an art form, an event, a culture, an organization, or
a personal development program
As you participate in Exploration activities, you should
consider:
- What you like and don't like about the experience
- Its potential value to you in terms of personal, intellectual or skill
development
- How you might connect this participation to future learning experiences

Investment activities are typically:
- Significant time commitments spanning a period of days, weeks, or
months
- Endeavors requiring a personal commitment to preparation, planning
and assuming responsibility within an event, a project, a group, or
a class
Investment activities encourage you to purposely commit your mental and
physical energies to gaining a deeper breadth of knowledge and skill development.
As you participate in Investment activities, you should:
- Intentionally and critically analyze the experience and identify the
skills learned
- Consider how these experiences help shape and define your interests,
values, work habits, and the way in which you view others and the world
around you
- Consider submitting competencies developed from your investment for
the IDEA activity transcript (based in the Career Development Center)
- Remember that verification on the Investment Reflection Sheet is required!
