What is a Sorority?
A sorority is a sisterhood of women that have gathered together to promote a common set of ideals and purposes. To understand more fully what a sorority is and its purpose we must go back in time to the end of the 1900's. In the 19th century, colleges were for men only, and fraternities were going strong on college campuses across the nation. By the end of the 1900's women were finally able to pursue higher education in college, yet college still remained predominately male environment. To triumph personally and academically in this environment, women searched for encouragement and support as well as an outlet for their talents and dreams. As a result, sororities began to be founded, and their spirit of promoting the ideal women has survived.

Why join Tri-sigma and what can it offer me?
Tri-sigma was founded by eight women that wanted to promote strong womanly character, high standard of conduct, and insure perpetual bond of friendship. The ladies at ISU live by these morals and the motto, "To receive much, we must give much." This means by joining Tri-Sigma you are able to maximize your college experience. Besides Tri-Sigma being the best sorority, we share a strong sisterhood that enhances your college experience. All potential members have unique qualities that will positively impact our chapter. We encourage growth for these wonderful characteristics to become stronger while you are in our chapter. Many aspects you will receive include:

  • A support group to make college easier

  • Scholastic resources to help you achieve academic goals

  • Hands on leadership skills and future opportunity for leadership

  • Encouragement to get involved and maximize your potential on campus

  • Opportunity for active participation in community service projects

  • Life long bonds of friendship

What is Recruitment?
Recruitment is the new name for "rush." It is a selection process by which Greek organizations get to know potential new members. The purpose of recruitment is for Greek women to meet you and you meet Greek women. After a series of parties, women are selected for membership to different sororities. If you choose to participate in recruitment, there is no commitment to join a sorority. However, Recruitment is a once in a life time opportunity where ladies get a chance to make and create life long friendships across the campus.  (See events calendar dates and times.)

How do I become a member of Tri-sigma?

Once you have participated in our recruitment events, you may receive an invitation to join called a bid.  Before you can receive a bid you must be able to meet certain standards.

Grades

One of the focuses of our sorority is education because sorority women are college students, and it is the main objective of being in school.  Tri-sigma requires a 2.5 GPA in order to join and to be a member in good standing.

Dues

Another aspect of the sorority are financial obligations.   To function as an organization Tri-Sigma requires its members to pay national dues to our headquarters in Woodstock, VA.   The local chapters require dues, as well.  The following is the listing of one time fees to become a new member (Arc Degree) and initiation fees to become a full member (Circle Degree) of Sigma Sigma Sigma.  (Circle Degree traditionally will be performed 8 weeks after Arc Degree.)  The New member and Initiation Fees fulfill your financial obligations to National Headquarters for a full year.  Local fees began the month following initiation or Circle Degree.  The Zeta Theta chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma at Idaho State University requires $10-$20 per month during the school year for local dues.  (See Treasurer for a monthly payment schedule of local dues.)
