High School One-Act Theatre Competition (April 26 - 27, 2013)
Introduction
Workshops will be offered on Friday from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Students and teachers will be able to sign up for the workshops on Friday morning after they have checked in. If you are a high school teacher wanting to present a workshop, please contact Chad Gross at 282-3173.
The competition will be offering the opportunity for High School seniors to receive an ISU Theatre Scholarship. The scholarship will be a minimum of $500 and up to $1000. We would like to see all of your young theatre practitioner’s audition/interview for this scholarship. This scholarship is for a young actor and/or technician. The High School senior must be attending ISU in the fall as a Theatre Major while maintaining a 2.5 GPA or higher. Actors will need to have 2 contrasting monologues no longer than 30 seconds each. Technicians will need to bring copies of their work (i.e. photos, drawings, renderings, and/ or models) and will take part in a small interview. Technicians need to be ready to talk about their work. We will be having a Tech Olympics, showcasing the skills of all your young technicians. Sign your school up Friday morning before the competition begins. This event will take place Friday before the one-acts begin presenting. Events will include things such as: Fastest Dresser, Drill Master, Chord Winder, and Props Runner.

Trophies: Best of Show: Shall go to the best production overall
Top three one-act: shall go to the top three runners-up to Best of show
There shall be one overall of each of the following:

Tech Olympics Team
Tech Olympics Individual
Medallions: One actor from each cast will be selected as an All-Star-Cast member.
Each participating student will receive a participation certificate signed by a competition coordinator.
Rules and Policies
1. There is a responsibility concerning your attitude and that of your company toward play competition. Directors and students derive benefits from participation in play production, and no decision can take that away from them. You must realize there is literal truth in the statement, In a well-planned One-Act Play Competition, there are no losers. While it is natural and proper to strive to win, the purposes of participation in the creative arts are lost when students and directors behave in an unbecoming manner if they fail to win. Students usually reflect the attitude of the director.
2. Select a high quality play which will best represent the talents of your students and you own capabilities and which will reflect with credit upon the educational program of your school.
3. School Principals approval is required for each production.
4. Coaches must have proof of royalty.
5. Make sure to record the length of your play during rehearsal, as there will be a timekeeper during the competition and any plays going ;over will be penalized.
6. The following are not allowed: open flame, flash paper, gun powder, explosives of any kind.
7. The use of firearms and real weapons (guns, knives, etc.) shall NOT be permitted. Toy firearms and props may be used as long as they clearly look NOT real. Any props that look real need to be checked in with the tournament manager before and after each performance.
8. All one-acts shall be adjudicated. Adjudicators shall be knowledgeable in all aspects of theatre, and be physically and mentally fit to discharge their duties. They shall avoid fraternizing with the participating directors, administrators, or school officials prior to/ or during the competition. Adjudicators shall not negatively discuss the outcome of the competition with any participants or coaches. Adjudicators shall give oral critique to One-Act play participants at the conclusion of the competition.
Scenery
Every school will have a set of rehearsal cubes at their disposal (provided by ISU). The stock scenery will include:
12 Cubes 18” (w) x 18” (l) x 18” (h)
2 Boxes 24” (w) x 36” (l) x 25” (h)
4 Chairs
1 Table 18” (w) x 36” (l) x 30” (h)
Each school will be allowed to use the stock scenery however they wish. This will eliminate big bulky sets; all schools will have the same pieces. The only thing needed will be your costumes. The stage lighting will be a general wash which we will provide. There will be no specials.
There should not be any set-up needed. There will be no walk-throughs of the theatre or stage area until Friday morning of the competition. The dimensions of the stage given to you are as up-to-date as possible. We will continue to hold the competition in our thrust theatre.
All schools will have a time limit of 45 minutes to set-up, run, and strike their show.

Notes and Contact Information
The schedule runs in 1 hour long increments, based on how much time each show takes. Each production has 45 minutes total. This includes set up and strike. This will allow for a 15 minute bathroom break between pieces. Any conflicts regarding performance placement please note on registration or contact Michael Helman.
