High School One-Act Theatre Competition: April 25 - 26, 2014

ISU invites your school to enter the annual High School One-Act Competition! This two day event includes interactive workshops, Tech Olympics, and of course, a showcase of the best high school theatre across the region. Departmental scholarship auditions will be held the night before the competition on Thursday, April 24, 2014.

Please take a close look at all materials as some items have changed from previous years.

This year we have instituted a panel of three professional judges to adjudicate the festival. Verbal feedback will be given immediately following the strike of your One-Act Performance in the theatre. Written feedback will be distributed electronically following the competition. It is our intent to raise the level of competition by providing multiple judges and at the same time give each performance more direct feedback to help each program flourish.

2014 One-Act Competition Adjudicators

The competition this year will take place on April 25th (Friday) and 26th (Saturday). The early registration fee for this year’s two-day competition is $175.00 per school. The early registration deadline for your school’s materials and information is Monday, March 3, 2014. Registration AFTER March 3rd will be $250.00.

Your registration includes your one-act entry fee and admission for any and all students who wish to participate in the workshops offered at the competition. This year, all three adjudicators will also be presenting workshops during the Friday morning sessions between 8:00 am – 11:00 am. Students and teachers will be able to sign up for the workshops on Friday morning after they have checked in. An e-mail detailing workshop titles/times will be sent at the beginning of April along with the scoring rubric for the competition. If you are a high school teacher wanting to present a workshop, please contact Chad Gross at 282-3173.

Tech Olympics

We will be having a Tech Olympics competition as part of the event. The Tech Olympics showcases the skills of all your young technicians. Schools can present one team (of two students) for the Tech Olympics (participants can be identified at the competition or with your registration). Events will include things such as: Fastest Dresser, Drill Master, Cord Winder, and Props Runner.

Scenery for the One-Act Competition

Every school will have a set of rehearsal cubes at their disposal (provided by ISU).  The stock scenery will include:
12        Cubes              18” (w) x 18” (l) x 18” (h)
2          Boxes               24” (w) x 36” (l) x 25” (h)
4          Chairs
1          Table                18” (w) x 36” (l) x 30” (h)

Each school will be allowed to use the stock scenery however they wish.  This will eliminate big bulky sets; all schools will have the same pieces.  The only thing needed will be your costumes.  The stage lighting will be a general wash that we will provide.  There will be no specials.

The theatre will not be available for walk-through before Friday, April 25th. We are again using the Bistline Thrust Theatre (see enclosed schematic for dimensions if you are unfamiliar with the stage set-up).

All schools will have a time limit of 45 minutes to set-up, run, and strike their show. Following the strike of your production, verbal feedback from our panel of judges will be given in the theatre.

We hope to see all of you there!

Early Registration Fee (before March 3, 2014) - $175
