Whether you want a career in music or just the pleasure of performing or listening, there are courses of interest for you at ISU. The Department of Music offers a variety of music degrees and a music minor.
New Students
An audition is required for admission as a music major or music minor. An Audition Day is usually scheduled for the last Saturday in February each year. You may fill out the Scholarship Form ONLINE or Call 208-282-3636 or write to the music office (e-mail: music@isu.edu) to obtain the audition application form.
Facilities
The Department of Music is located in the Fine Arts Building, which includes a 450-seat recital hall called Goranson Hall. Most Music Department concerts are performed in the 1200-seat Joseph C. & Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall, which opened in 2005. This beautiful concert hall is located in the L.E. & Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center.
Music Ensembles
A variety of performing music ensembles are available to ISU students. Some ensembles are also open to community members. These performing groups include bands, choirs, orchestra, and chamber ensembles.
Scholarships / Audition Day
Now is the time to apply for your music audition. Applications are being accepted for the 2014-15 academic year. Auditions are by apppointment and should be scheduled in advance. Our next audition day is scheduled in February 22 and March 15, 2014.
Scholarships are available to both majors and nonmajors for participation in music ensembles. All scholarships are awarded on the basis of an audition. The Department of Music is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
Spotlight on Music
Symphonic Band Concert
On Friday October 4th at 7:30 PM in Jensen Grand Concert Hall, the Idaho State University Symphonic Band will again be sharing the concert stage with the Snake River New Horizons Band, an adult beginner recently formed in Pocatello. Music to include the band classics Amparito Roca by Texidor, the Florentiner March by Fucik, and Psalm for Band by Persichetti, and A Festival Prelude by Reed.
ISU Choral Invitational
The 28th annual ISU Choral Invitational Festival will be held in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center on Friday and Saturday, October 11 & 12. Dr. Patrick Patton, from Casper, Wyoming, will serve as the Guest Conductor for more than 500 high school choral singers from around the state of Idaho. The Gala Festival Concert will be held at 7:00 p.m. in Jensen Grand Concert Hall on Saturday, October 12, and will feature the ISU Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and Women's Choir, performances by each of the 12 participating High School ensembles, and the Massed Choir under the direction of Dr. Patton.
