Keum Hwa Cha is Assistant Professor in the School of Performing Arts at Idaho State University, where she teaches applied violin, viola and chamber music. She was named concertmaster of the Idaho State-Civic Symphony in 2011. Keum Hwa has given numerous concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in South Korea and the United States, and has performed with: Cornell Contemporary Chamber Players, Binghamton Philharmonic, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, Han-Eum Chamber Ensemble, and the Seoul Tutti Ensemble. Her summer festival appearances include Kneisel Hall, Musicorda, Quartet Program, the Philadelphia International Music Festival, and the Lydian String Quartet Festival. Keum Hwa's 2014-15 season highlights include the featured soloist in Scheherazade of Rimsky-Korsakov with the ISCS, and a guest soloist with the ISU Wind Ensemble.
Keum Hwa served as Director of Chamber Orchestra at Idaho State University, receiving the highest teaching evaluation. She was a leader and founder of Ka-Eum String Chamber Orchestra at Eastman School of Music and member of piano trio, "Zone" in S. Korea. As an orchestral musician, Keum Hwa has had the privilege of playing under maestros David Effron, Robert Shaw and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and she was Concertmaster of Meadows Symphony Orchestra. Prior to her appointment at the Idaho State University, Keum Hwa taught at Chung-Ang University, Dankook University, Dongduk Women’s University, and Sungshin Women’s University in S. Korea and the University of Rochester, and she was a Teaching Assistant of Castleman at Eastman School of Music while pursuing her doctoral degree.
Keum Hwa has extensive experiences in historical performance practice, playing with a baroque violin in early music ensembles under the direction of Paul O'Dette at Eastman. While performing with her trio in NY, her group privately studied with Malcolm Bilson at Cornell University. Keum Hwa studied with Hyo Kang, Masuko Ushioda, Charels Castleman, and Chee-Yun Kim and her chamber music studies include Lucy Stolzman, Katherine Murdock, Eric Shumsky, James Dunham, Norman Fisher, Alan Harris, Andres Diaz, Stephen Drury, Lydian String Quartet and Ying Quartet.
A devoted educator, Keum Hwa has worked closely with public school music directors and youth orchestras, promoting significance of music education for youth and giving master classes and frequent workshops to high schools and colleges. Recently, she presented at 2014 IMEA Conference, and has served as a judge in several competitions, including the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival in Hailey, the Idaho Falls Music Festival, and Youth Soloist Competition in Twin Falls. Many of her students have received academic scholarships, music awards and various accolades for their accomplishments, and her pre-collegiate students have served as principal players in youth orchestras and been selected to play with All-State Honor Orchestra. Every summer, Keum Hwa teaches at Summer Institute for Piano and Strings, held in ISU Stephens Performing Arts Center.
