What can I do with an MA degree in sociology?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 15% increase in employment for sociologists from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average rate for all occupations (BLS, 2014/15). Graduates from our program gain a set of skills that are identified as highly valuable in the job market: oral and written expression, mathematical reasoning, deductive and inductive reasoning, fluency of ideas, and written comprehension.

Our graduates are employed in different fields and different kinds of jobs which is a reflection of the broad knowledge and applicability of the Sociology degree. Graduates with an MA degree in Sociology from ISU are holding occupations as college administrators or counselors, college teachers, business owners or managers, agency managers, researchers, clinicians, lawyers, and school teachers. About 23% of our graduates went on to earn doctoral degrees.
