Non-resident Tuition Waivers

Idaho State University awards Non-Resident Tuition Waivers (NRTW) to students whose residency is outside the state of Idaho. These awards are primarily made on the basis of academic merit. The Office of Financial Aid has special NRTWs which are awarded based on demonstrated financial need and require the filing of a FAFSA application in order to be considered. Students in the Non-traditional Pharmacy Program are not eligible for any non-resident tuition waivers. NOTE: Time accrued while participating in ANY of the NRTW programs will NOT count toward the length of time required to gain Idaho residency status.

For undergraduate students, the Application for Admission to ISU is the application for Non-Resident Tuition Waiver consideration. Completed application materials (Application for Admission, high school and/or all college transcripts, and ACT or SAT test scores) must be submitted by the scholarship deadline for priority consideration. The scholarship deadline is February 15 for Fall entry and November 1 for spring entry. Continuing undergraduate students who have not previously been awarded a NRTW may contact the Scholarship Office and request NRTW consideration.

Out of State Scholar Non-resident Tuition Waivers

Out of State Scholar NRTWs are used to recruit top non-resident students to ISU. The number of awards available is based on available annual funding. Out of State Scholar NRTWs are highly competitive, consequently the average GPA awarded is typically a 3.75 or higher. These awards waive the total amount of non-resident tuition.

Minimum Criteria:

Non-resident Tuition Waivers for Technology Majors

Non-resident Tuition Waivers for Technology Majors (aka Technology Waivers) are used to recruit top non-resident students to ISU who will study in an approved technology-related field. These awards waive the total amount of non-resident tuition.

Minimum Criteria:

Utah Reciprocity Non-resident Tuition Waivers

ISU will waive non-resident tuition for a set number of Utah residents who are enrolled or seeking enrollment at ISU as full-time undergraduate or graduate students (full-time is defined as 12 or more credits per semester for undergraduate students and 9 or more credits per semester for graduate students). For initial awarding, preference is given to students with a 3.00 GPA or higher. Participating undergraduate students must maintain a 2.00 GPA (3.00 GPA for graduate students) for Utah waiver renewal . Awards are renewable for up to eight semesters based on meeting the minimum criteria. These awards waive the total amount of non-resident tuition.

The priorities for consideration are as follows:

  1. A Utah resident currently enrolled at ISU as a full-time student.
  2. A Utah resident currently enrolled at Utah State University (USU) seeking transfer admission to ISU in a major not offered at USU.
  3. A new student from Utah seeking admission to ISU in a major not offered at USU.
  4. A Utah resident currently enrolled at USU seeking transfer admission to ISU in any major.
  5. A new student from Utah seeking admission to ISU in any major.

NOTE: Within each priority category, academically superior students (those with a higher GPA) will receive priority.

Washington Reciprocity Non-resident Tuition Waivers

ISU will waive non-resident tuition for a limited number of Washington residents who are enrolled or seeking enrollment at ISU as full-time undergraduate or graduate students (full-time is defined as 12 or more credits per semester for undergraduate students and 9 or more credits per semester for graduate students). Since there are so few of these waivers available, competition is very high and those awarded typically have GPAs above a 3.75. Participating students must maintain a 3.00 GPA for Washington waiver renewal . Awards are renewable for up to eight semesters based on meeting the minimum criteria. Washington waivers will not be given to students in oversubscribed majors. Oversubscribed majors include pharmacy and all academic health professions, with the exception of health care administration and radiographic science. These awards waive the total amount of non-resident tuition.

The priorities for consideration are as follows:

  1. A Washington resident currently enrolled at ISU as a full-time student.
  2. A Washington resident currently enrolled in a Washington post-secondary institution seeking transfer admission to ISU in a major not offered at their institution.
  3. A new student from Washington seeking admission to ISU in a major not offered at any institution in Washington.
  4. A Washington resident currently enrolled at a Washington institution seeking transfer admission to ISU in any major.
  5. A new student from Washington seeking admission to ISU in any major.

NOTE: Within each priority category, academically superior students (those with a higher GPA) will receive priority.

Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

WHAT IS IT?

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education that allows students residing in participant states to attend programs at Idaho State University at a reduced cost.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Undergraduate academic or applied technology students from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming.

ARE ALL PROGRAMS OF STUDY WUE ELIGIBLE?

All fields of study at Idaho State University are WUE eligible. However, some high demand or oversubscribed programs may limit the number of non-resident students who can be admitted to their programs.

HOW DO STUDENTS APPLY FOR WUE?

WUE is treated like a type of scholarship at ISU. Incoming freshmen and transfer students must submit all admissions materials (admission application, application fee, ACT or SAT scores, and official high school or college transcripts) to the university in order to be considered. The Application for Admission serves as the WUE application. For initial awarding, preference is given to students with at least a 3.00 GPA and to those who meet our scholarship application deadline. Students who do not meet this criteria will be considered on an individual basis.

AS A WUE STUDENT, WHAT WILL BE MY TUITION EXPENSE AT ISU?

WUE students pay 1.5 times the Idaho resident tuition instead of full non-resident tuition plus resident tuition, for a tremendous cost savings (for 2007-08, WUE students will save $3,242 per semester or $6,484 per year).

HOW ARE STUDENTS NOTIFIED ABOUT WUE AWARDS?

Students are notified of their WUE awards in writing by the ISU Scholarship Office and have until the date stated in their award letter and on their reply form to accept or decline the award.

HOW DO STUDENTS KEEP WUE ELIGIBILITY FROM YEAR TO YEAR?

Students who continue to meet the WUE requirements each semester will be automatically awarded the waiver for a maximum of 4 years or 8 semesters. The renewal requirements are: 1) successfully complete full-time credits (12 credits) each semester (or 24 credits in the academic year), 2) have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00, and 3) not be placed on academic or disciplinary probation.
