Introduction of Idaho State University Human Subjects Committee
The Human Subjects Committee is an institutional review board (IRB) whose function is to provide for the protection of humans enrolled as subjects in research and to advise various funding agencies of the potential impact of proposed research on human subjects. The Human Subjects Committee (HSC) adheres to the Federal guidelines as outlined in 45 CFR 46, as well as other Federal and State regulations governing the use of human subjects in research.
The Human Subjects Committee reviews all research involving human as subjects, done at ISU by faculty, staff, sutdents, or representatives of the University regardless of the research funding. Research is defined as any activity whose goal is to add to or enhance generalizable knowledge in a discipline area. Researchers are requried to complete a Human Subjects Committee Protocol for review prior to beginning any research project in which humans will be enrolled as subjects. Guidelines for the preparation of protocols are contained in the Human Subjects Manual for Investigators . Forms are available to download in protected document format(pdf). Forms are used to submit new proposals and to renew an application. Expedited and full board reviews are renewed every year. Proposals that are approved as Certificate of Expemptions are renewed every three years.
