The Psychology Clinic is a training and behavioral health care center connected with the ISU Psychology Department. This treatment facility, which was established in 1978, provides training for doctoral students in the clinical psychology program as well as a low cost treatment option for both children and adults living in Southeastern Idaho.
Services are not restricted to the university and in fact most clients are community members. Clients work collaboratively with psychology trainees and the supervising clinical faculty to resolve emotional/ behavioral problems and reach personal goals.
All assistance and records are confidential, except as excluded by law.

Clinical Services
Services Provided by the Psychology Clinic
The clinical services provided primarily reflect the specialty areas of the faculty members of the Psychology Department at ISU. Currently, the Psychology Clinic offers services for:
- emotional disorders of adults, adolescents, and children (e.g., depression, anxiety, and anger)
- behavior problems of children and pre-adolescents
- children with difficulty attending school or experiencing distress while at school
- children showing reluctance or unwillingness to speak
- women with symptoms of depression during pregnancy and the postpartum
- couples/family therapy
- trauma treatment
- memory and cognitive assessments
- psycho-educational evaluations
Clinic Hours
The clinic is open year-round but has more limited availability of services in the summer. Hours are generally restricted to the workday, 9am to 6pm during the academic year and 9am to 5:30pm in the summer. Some services may have a waiting list, although clients can usually obtain services within one month. Individuals who cannot be served or cannot wait are referred to appropriate community services.

Emergencies
Psychology Clinic during Emergency Situations
The Psychology Clinic is not equipped to offer treatment to individuals who are presently suicidal or need immediate emergency intervention. Emergency services are provided by:

Location
The ISU Psychology Clinic is located on the fifth floor of Garrison House, Building 63, on East Terry Avenue. Enter the parking lot behind the Garrison building (between Garrison House and the Education Building) just before the Wells Fargo ATM machine (as seen in the picture above). The physical address is 1400 E. Terry Street, Pocatello, ID 83209.
Parking
You will need to obtain a parking pass from the Clinic Secretary, Mary, before parking in this lot.
Look for the white "Patient/Client Parking" signs. These are the first 6 parking spots on the right-hand side of the lot.
Please place the Guest Parking Pass on the left side of your dashboard to avoid receiving a parking ticket. Unfortunately, we can NOT reverse parking tickets.
Clinic Staff and Supervisors
The Psychology Clinic is staffed by the Clinic Director (Kimberly Nylen, Ph.D.), our clinic secretary (Mary), six full time clinical faculty, two graduate assistants and approximately 20 students from the clinical training program.
- Kimberly Nylen, Ph.D., Director, provides time-limited individual therapies for mood-related problems. She has expertise in treating adult mood and anxiety disorders and depression during pregnancy and after childbirth.
- Courtney Haight, Ph.D., provides services to families of children and adolescents who show reluctance or unwillingness to speak and difficulty attending school/distress while at school. She also provides services to children and adolescents with mood-related problems such as anxiety and depression.
- Steven Lawyer, Ph.D., provides brief and cognitive-behavioral therapies for mood-related problems, such as anxiety and depression. He has expertise in treating panic disorder, OCD, and trauma-related problems.
- Shannon Lynch, Ph.D., provides services to couples, adolescents, and families. Services help couples and families to adjust to change and improve communication and conflict resolution skills. Dr. Lynch also has expertise in group therapy and trauma related problems.
- Mark Roberts, Ph.D., provides services to families of preadolescent children presenting oppositional or predelinquent behavior, as well as evaluations of children's disorders.
- Peter Vik, Ph.D., focuses on neurocognitive assessments.
All faculty are licensed in the State of Idaho or are working under supervision toward licensure.
The Psychology Clinic participates in the ISU Interdisciplinary Evaluation Team during spring semester, providing psychological assessments of youth presenting with multiple disabilities.
Fees
Clinic Fees and Charges
There is no charge for an initial consultation. ISU students, faculty and staff receive a fee reduction, however, students should always contact the ISU Counseling and Testing Center (208-282-2130) where services are provided to students at no cost.
Fees at the ISU Psychology Clinic are based on a sliding fee scale similar to that used by public sector agencies such as the Department of Health and Welfare.
Separate fees have been established for special services (e.g., ADA assessments, forensic work).
Since we are a training facility with student therapist involvement, insurance companies are often not obligated to cover our services. Upon request, we will assist clients who wish to file insurance claims, but we are unable to file a claim for you.
All clients sign an informed consent and fee agreement. Clients are expected to pay at least half of their evaluation fee when services commence.
Some faculty may see patients themselves through the Faculty Practice Plan (FPP); patients participating in the FPP are billed at the lower limit of prevailing community rates.
Training
Clinic Training Admission and Facilities
The Psychology Clinic is a training facility. Special conditions surrounding the training function of the clinic (e.g., role of students, research options, protocol limitations) are explained at the time of initial consultation if applicable.
The physical structure includes six standard treatment/consultation rooms, two testing areas, a child playroom, and several group/conference rooms, all equipped with standard observational facilities. Our facility includes a computer lab and library for graduate student use, as well as video conferencing capabilities.
Computerized administration and scoring is available for frequently used psychological tests (e.g., WAIS-IV/WMS-IV, MMPI-2, PAI).
Library searches using Psych INFO and medical databases can also be conducted on site.
The clinic exposes psychology students to a variety of different training experiences, providing both individual and group supervision in practicum. Specialty workshops by external faculty (e.g., crisis management, Pediatric Health Psychology) are provided annually.
