Letter from the President

June 24, 2011

Dear Friend of Idaho State University,

One of the keys to a great institution of higher learning is great research opportunities.

Recently, Idaho State University was able to make an investment that will allow us to continue to the next level of research excellence. Idaho State University was able to, using no state-appropriated funds, purchase the Ballard building, located in a research park adjacent to Idaho Accelerator Center and ON Semiconductor.

The 200,000-square-foot facility, is ready-made for research, and can be maintained with no state-appropriated funds. Instead of relying on state money, it will be run as a business, with grants and outside organizations funding the facility through world-class research.

The Ballard building will provide a cost-effective way for researchers to work, but perhaps more importantly, it will provide more opportunities for our students to work alongside renowned researchers, using state-of-the-art equipment and making important discoveries.

Businesses have already taken notice of our ever-growing research portfolio at Idaho State University. ON Semiconductor recently donated high-tech equipment for the Ballard facility. The equipment will prove useful in the areas of crystal growth and nanotechnology research as well as applications in advanced radiation detection.

Both private industry and federal laboratories have shown interest in the new facility, and partnership possibilities at Idaho State University. The Ballard Building has the appropriate environment and existing infrastructure for large scientific equipment, including heating and cooling controls, and clean rooms. I look forward to welcoming the best and brightest researchers in materials science, homeland security and radio-pharmaceuticals to make groundbreaking discoveries here in Southeast Idaho.

Our faculty and students benefit when we can offer the best in facilities and equipment. With the right tools and partnerships, our faculty are already doing research being recognized globally. Our students are gaining the opportunity to work with people who are already well established and respected in their fields. It is just one more way that Idaho State University is bringing high-quality research and opportunities to Southeast Idaho.

Go Bengals!
