Letter from the President

Dear Friend of Idaho State University,

In today's world it is important to stay at technology's forefront, not just in our research, but also in the way we communicate.

Social networking or social media, once considered simply a medium for teenagers to chat with each other, has become a great method for engaging people of all ages in important discussions and a venue for businesses, organizations and universities to connect with the people they serve.

At Idaho State University, we want to be part of the conversations that are already happening on the Internet. Tools such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter can provide a great opportunity for us to talk about what is happening here at ISU, and to hear what others have to say as well.

On our Facebook page, you will find photos of Idaho State University, along with information about some of the great events happening on campus. You'll also find stories about exciting breakthroughs in research and students who are helping communities in interesting ways.

The page is also a place for us to answer questions about the University, and show what we offer in a more casual, friendly light than the more traditional promotional material. If you have not had the opportunity to see the campus in a while, or if you just missed an event, don't worry; our photographers have been there and will post photos and video for you to feel like you had been there.

We are also delving into the world of microblogging with our Twitter page. Twitter allows people and organizations to communicate in short, 140-character messages. On our page, you'll find links to all of the news at Idaho State University, and we hope to post thought-provoking questions and other ideas inviting your responses.

At IdahoStateU, the University's YouTube channel, we're sharing all kinds of videos, from footage of the recent dedication of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies to Nepalese dancers and a rock band during a student-sponsored event to celebrate Nepal's heritage and culture. On YouTube, prospective students can see what is happening here and become excited about both our academics and campus life.

These are the ways people are communicating in today's culture, and it's important that we continue to grow in the ways we reach alumni, prospective students and members of our campus community. We're reaching an audience already — our Facebook page has reached nearly 900 subscribers, known as "fans," since we launched it two weeks ago.

You can be part of the conversation, too. Become a fan of Idaho State University on Facebook and put us over that 1,000 mark today. Subscribe to our YouTube channel and see video from some important events and some innovative research and teaching. Follow us on Twitter and get up-to-the-minute updates about what we are doing to expand our influence for good. See what we are doing at ISU and become a part of our conversation.
