Professor Douglas C. Nilson

Teaching and Research Specialties: American Government and Politics, Political Psychology and Sociology, Empirical Political Theory and Methods

Prior to teaching at Idaho State University, Professor Nilson worked at the University of Redlands in California. His current research interests include the conceptualization and measurement of ideology, state/federal relations at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, and environmental policy analysis. Additionally, he and Professor Burns recently evaluated civic education in Ecuador.

In addition to his intellectual and pedagogical commitments, Professor Nilson believes that it is important to apply social scientific knowledge in a variety of societal settings. He remains active in numerous policy focused organizations, public task forces, and is a consultant to organizations outside of the University.

In the academic year 2003-4, Nilson was chair of the faculty senate.

Dr. Nilson was named as Idaho State University’s “Distinguished Public Service Professor” for the 2004-2005 academic year.
