The closest bet for downhill skiing is Pebble Creek Ski Area located about 20 miles from Pocatello, featuring 2,200 feet of vertical drop, 54 runs on 1,100 acres, one double and two triple chairs and modest lift ticket prices. For the more adventurous, the trek to Pebble Creek's backside and nearly 3,000 vertical feet of powder runs is highly coveted. Other resorts within easy driving distance include Grand Targhee, Sun Valley, Pomerelle, and Kelly Canyon resorts in Idaho, Jackson Hole in Wyoming, as well north Utah's famous downhill resorts.
Occasionally during the winter cross-country skiing is available right in Pocatello, and regularly so in Idaho Falls. Near the ISU main campus in Pocatello, the ISU Outdoor Adventure Center lists 18 cross-country ski trails within a 30-mile radius, many on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Skiing on groomed trails is available at the Mink Creek Nordic Center, for a small fee, less than 20 miles from campus. The city of Idaho Falls operates several groomed cross-country ski areas. Within 2 to 3 hours drive? – again too many options to mention. Equipment rentals available through the OAC.
