There are several history courses that include outdoor activities and field trips. Summer sessions on Idaho history include trips to the Fort Hall Reservation, Massacre Rocks and American Falls Dam.
The Idaho State University chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society has done some daylong fieldtrips, such as a trip to the historic town of Chesterfield, and is planning more excursions.
Some regular academic history courses, such as the Historical Geography of Idaho, include one or more fieldtrips to geologic formations in Southeast Idaho.
The history department's public history internships have included historic preservation positions requiring significant periods outside working in historical neighborhoods, and an internship writing the history narrative in conjunction with an archaeological dig in Southeast Idaho.
