Fly fishing and angling
East Idaho is well known for fishing and students at ISU-Idaho Falls can fish the famous main Snake River from University Place, about 100 yards from classrooms. In Pocatello, the closest river options are the Portneuf River by Inkom and Lava Hot Springs, and the main Snake River above and below American Falls Reservoir. American Falls Reservoir is a fine still-water fishery for a variety of species, and a bout one-half hour from Pocatello, the Wilson Ponds and Springfield Reservoir, flanking the north end of American Falls, offer a variety of options. Further away, there are a dozen or more blue ribbon trout fisheries within a 1.5 to 3hour drive. Southeast Idaho irrigation reservoirs, such as Chesterfield and Daniels, are famous for producing big trout and are an easy drive from the Pocatello campus. The upper Salmon River, within about 3 hours from Pocatello, offers anglers a crack at ocean-run steelhead, and, in some years, Chinook salmon. Don't overlook ice fishing on area reservoirs during the winter months!
