CROSS COUNTRY SKI CLASS

TEXT:  "Cross Country Skiing Right", by William Hall.  Two copies are available in the Outdoor Program Office Library.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is a well-rounded introduction to cross country skiing, including an explanation of techniques, equipment and safety considerations.  It is the goal of this course to give students the basic skills and knowledge to safely enjoy and further explore the sport of cross country skiing on their own.

GRADING:
    60%    Attendance and Participation
    20%    Final Exam (Take Home)
    20%    Project
    Any missed class periods may be made up with an additional project.
    No incompletes will be given in this class.

TENTATIVE CALENDAR:
1st Class:    Introduction, Lecture on Equipment, Clothing, and Cold Weather Injuries.  Text sections I, II, & III
2nd Class:    Flat Track Techniques (diagonal stride, double pole.)  Text sections IV & V
3rd Class:    Uphill and Downhill Techniques.  Text section V
4th Class:    Tour
5th Class:    Tour
6th Class:    Tour & Lecture on Avalanche Hazard.  Text section VIII
7th Class:    Yurt Tour, Take Home Exam Handed Out
8th Class:    Tour, Turn in Final Written Exam

ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES:
1.    Cross Country Ski Tours offered by the Outdoor Program
2.    Workshops offered by the Outdoor Program:  Avalanche Workshop, Winter Survival Workshop, and/or Telemark Workshop.
