IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY OUTDOOR PROGRAM SUMMER WORKSHOPS
Advanced Rock Climbing - Detailed Information

DATES:  July 27, 29 through August 1

PREREQUISITES:  Beginning Rock Climbing, or equivalent experience.

PRE-TRIP MEETING:  Pre-trip meeting July 27, 5:30pm at the Outdoor Program Office.  Attendance at the Pre-trip meeting is mandatory.

GENERAL ITINERARY:  The workshop will leave Pocatello at 8:00am, July 29 and travel to the City of Rocks.  The workshop will return to Pocatello late on Sunday, August 1st.

GOALS:  The main goal of the workshop will be to give participants a more indepth understanding of technical rock climbing and a general knowledge of the sport so that participants will have the knowledge to:

COSTS:  The $150 workshop fee covers climbing equipment, transportation and instructional materials.  The fee is reduced to $110 if you sign up for academic credit.  These fees do not include food costs.

FOOD ARRANGEMENTS:  We will buy food and cook dinners as a group using Dutch ovens.  Workshop participants should plan on sharing food expenses which will run approximately $30.00 per person in addition to the workshop fee.

EQUIPMENT:  Group climbing equipment will be provided.  It is recommended that you use your personal climbing equipment (shoes, harness, belay device, protection) if you have it.  If you have no personal equipment, these items will be provided for you.  Shoes can be rented through the ISU Wilderness Rental Center.

HOUSING:  This course will be held at the City of Rocks National Reserve, and we will be camping out.  No camping equipment will be provided, but is available at ISU's Wilderness Equipment Rental Center, 236-2945.

RISK ASSUMPTIONS:  Like any activity held outdoors, please be aware that Rock Climbing is very dangerous.  It is impossible to list all the dangers involved in the sport.  The eventualities of injuries and death are so diverse, no one can second-guess everything that can go wrong.  Some possible injuries can result from being hit by rocks, falling from cliffs, receiving injuries from climbing tools, etc.  IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT THE DANGERS AND RISKS, PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS AND THEN MAKE A CAREFUL DECISION WHETHER OR NOT TO PARTICIPATE.  Participation is at your own risk.

APPLICATION TO ATTEND WORKSHOP:  An application to attend the workshop has been enclosed.  A $20 deposit must accompany your application to reserve a place on the workshop.  Deposits are fully refundable up to 2 weeks before the workshop.  After two weeks, a $10 transaction fee is retained.  All workshops have limited enrollments and participants are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
