COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills of advanced rock climbing in a safe, enjoyable manner.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Our goal is the following:
1. To develop an appreciation of advanced
rock climbing skills and techniques with a safe and environmentally sound
approach.
2. The ability to demonstrate advanced rock
climbing techniques.
3. The ability to care for and properly use
climbing equipment in a safe manner.
4. To provide students with the knowledge
and skills to climb on their own and to evaluate the safety of other climbers.
5. By written or verbal means, be able to
solve potential problems.
6. To have a unique and enjoyable experience.
INSTRUCTOR'S NOTE: I acknowledge that the students enrolled in this course have different physical, psychological, and emotional ability levels. If at any time you are being pushed too far, it is your responsibility to let me know immediately!
ALSO: Because of the nature of this course, I reserve the right to remove from class any student(s) who exposes the class to unnecessary dangers by means of improper use of technique, poor judgement, or lack of concern for safety.
GRADING: 60% of your grade will be based on attendance and participation, plus your ability to demonstrate the skills learned in this course. The remainder of the course grade will be based on the following work:
20% Written report of project
20% Written final exam
COURSE FEE: The $25.00 fee covers group equipment and instructional materials.
PERSONAL EQUIPMENT: It is suggested that you use your personal gear, if you have it, as you will be both more comfortable and familiar with it. If you have no personal equipment, the Outdoor Program will supply required items. ISU's Wilderness Equipment Rental Center rents climbing shoes to students.

PHYSICAL EFFORT INVOLVED IN THIS CLASS: To do this
class you need to be physically able to climb vertical rock faces 40-250
feet. In addition to climbing, you will be hiking over hilly and
rocky terrain for lengths of up to five miles. You also need to be
prepared to spend extended periods of time in a variety of weather and
temperature conditions.
