Performance Poet Darren Edwards Sets Show April 21

Performance poet Darren Edwards will be coming to ISU on April 21to give a performance and lead a workshop on composing and performing slam poetry.  The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Education Building Auditorium: performance 5:00PM-6:00PM.  Workshop 6:00-7:30PM.

Slam poetry has, since the 1990s, created new interest in poetry and the possibilities of performing poetry. It has been particularly popular with youth and disaffected groups, who frequently choose social justice-related subject matter. The poems are meant to be performed; the author/performer's gestures, intonation, rhythm, cadence, and expression are all important aspects of the work.
Competitive "slam" events have been created to capitalize on audience response and participation.

Darren Edwards has created regular open mic and slam events as well as competing in national events, himself.  He has published numerous poetic works as well as creative non-fiction, and has been asked to read on several regional radio programs.  He has taught creative writing at Dixie State University and has mentored numerous aspiring performance poets.  He is currently the managing editor of The Independentnewspaper in Saint George, UT.

The event is co-sponsored by the Cultural Events Committee, the College of Education, and the ISU Department of English.
