Craig Green is new Associate Director of Scholarships

Craig A. Green took over as Associate Director of Scholarships on May 27. Prior to coming to ISU, he served for more than 25 years in various senior level positions related to financial aid, scholarships, and enrollment services, at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The former head of the Scholarship Office, Jody Finnegan, has moved to Financial Aid. She is now serving as the Team Lead for the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office's implementation of Banner.

Dental hygiene faculty and students meet with Idaho Congressional Delegation

Idaho State University dental hygiene faculty and students have had an eventful summer meeting with the Idaho Congressional delegation, visiting NIH, presenting research findings and participating in national meetings.

On June 17, Professor Kathleen Hodges and three dental hygienists who are alumni of the ISU dental hygiene program were among the more than 170 dental hygienists from across the country to participate in the American Dental Hygienists’ Association “Lobby Day 2009” on Capitol Hill. Joining Hodges were Lisa Higbee, a dental hygienist from Pocatello; Sally Kane, President of the Idaho Dental Hygienists’ Association and a practicing public health hygienist in Boise; and Vanessa Hanser, Vice President of the IDHA and a private practice hygienist. They lobbied to keep oral health as part of the health reform bill and to expand the scope of practice for dental hygienists. The group met with the entire Idaho Congressional Delegation, including Rep. Mike Simpson, Rep. Walt Minnick and Senators Mike Crapo and James E. Risch.

In mid June, ISU dental hygiene professor and Director of graduate studies Linda Boyd, Associate Professor Tara Johnson, and Associate Professor Ellen Rogo toured the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in Washington, D.C.

They were escorted and led by Rep. Mike Simpson.

“It was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Boyd said.

Dental hygiene faculty members presented six refereed research poster presentations at the American Dental Hygienists’ Association annual meeting in Washington, D.C., that was held June 16-23.

Presenters were:

Bowen, Agado, Boyd, Johnson, and Rogo also made research presentations at the North American Dental Hygiene Research Conference held June 15-17 on the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Md.,Bowen and Agado presented a lunch and learn about exploring the oral/respiratory link between chronic periodontal disease and chronic pulmonary disease. Boyd also presented a lunch and learn about teledentistry, Johnson presented research about oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines and Rogo presented on understanding dental hygienists as adult learners in social action.

Hodges, chair of the dental hygiene department, also attended the 42nd annual National American Dental Education Association Program Directors’ Conference in Savannah, Ga., June 13-16 where she made a presentation on curriculum management. Kandi Garland, Assistant Professor, attended the OSAP meeting and presented a referred poster comparing online and in classroom OSHA training.

News Bites

ISU-Boise is moving to ISU-Meridian Health Science Center; offices reopen Aug. 5

ISU-Boise will become ISU-Meridian Health Science Center this weekend as faculty and staff began the move to the new facility Friday, July 31.

The Center anticipates reopening to the public Wednesday, Aug. 5.

In the meantime, on Monday and Tuesday, Aug 3-4, ISU employees in the Treasure Valley will set up their offices, IT systems will be relocated, and local authorities will inspect and approve the facility for occupancy.

The ISU-Boise building is closed for business. On Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 3-4, there will be no public access.

Normal business hours of 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. for the ISU-Meridan Health Science Center should resume Wednesday, Aug. 5.

ISU-Meridian College of Pharmacy is accepting applications for an administrative assistant position

Racquetball courts temporarily closed

Racquetball courts at Reed Gym will be closed through Aug. 17 while the area is remodeled. For more information, call Campus Recreation at ext. 4854.

Flags will be flown at half-staff Sunday

Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter has ordered flags at the State Capitol Building and other state buildings and facilities to be flown at half-staff on Sunday, Aug. 2, in honor of Spc. Randy L.J. Neff Jr. Neff, 24, of Blackfoot, died in Zabul Province Afghanistan on July 22. Services will be held at the Soldiers Chapel in Fort Carson, Colorado at 3 p.m.

Audio/Visual classroom technology training sessions in Rendezvous building

For faculty members new to teaching in the Rendezvous building, on Friday, August 21, Educational Technology Services will be holding two Audio/Visual classroom technology training sessions in Rendezvous room 111.
