Calling Party Identification (Caller ID)

As a result of continued requests for the "Caller ID" feature on our telephone system, we have upgraded system software and hardware.  Home Caller ID boxes will no longer display "Unavailable" or "Out of Area" when a call is made from a campus telephone.  The Caller ID box will display "ID ST UNIV + Your Phone Number."

The request to upgrade our telephone system came from many sources, but always for the same reason.   "People I call from campus do not answer their telephone because they think I am a solicitor."  Frankly, most of us do not want to answer our home phone when we cannot identify who is calling.  We are all victims of unwanted or unidentified calls.

The primary purpose of this telephone system upgrade is to provide the local community with calling party information on their Caller ID boxes.**   As a value added feature of this service, if you have a campus telephone with display on your desk, you will also see the phone number of the party that is calling you from off campus.***

The cost to implement the outbound portion of this service is being funded by an increase in the monthly telephone equipment charges. (Account Directors have been notified of the effect on individual accounts.)  The cost to implement the inbound portion of this service will require a one-time charge to upgrade individual telephone sets.  If you have a basic ROLM Phone 120 (one row of white buttons), the cost to upgrade will be $215.00.  If you have a ROLM Phone 240 feature phone (three rows of white buttons), the cost to upgrade will be $320.00.  The process to request a telephone set upgrade is to submit a work order by calling x4541 or by using our on-line work order.

Note: You do not need to upgrade your campus phone if you do not need inbound calling party information.  Your phone will continue to work just like it always has.

**If you are concerned with privacy, and would like to block your call from displaying calling party identification, we have provided a   call-by-call method to block your phone number from being displayed.  Normally, to place an outside call, you pick up the handset and dial the access code 8 or 9.  To block your call from displaying calling party identification, pick up the handset and dial 67 before the access code 8 or 9.

***This feature is only available using proprietary ROLM Phones in administrative and faculty offices and cannot be accomplished using across the shelf caller ID boxes.

How it works:

Incoming Calls-
-If a call comes in from the local calling area, you will always get calling party info on your RolmPhone display. (Unless the caller has it blocked)
-If a call comes in long distance, depending on the source, you may or may not get calling party info on your RolmPhone display. (Or if the caller has it blocked)

Out Going Calls-
-If you call a local number, 8+number, your actual number will be sent.
-If you call a local number, 678+number, your number will be blocked.
-If you call long distance, 9+FAC+number, you will send the number 208-282-0211 ( main switchboard number)
-If you call long distance, 679+FAC+number, the number will be blocked.

-If you have have been forwarding your phone to an off campus number using 8+number, it will no longer work.
You must now forward to 678+number.
Note: Only users with a class of service allowing off campus forwarding can do this. (Off campus forwarding ties up (2) trunks with each call.) Any user requesting off campus forwarding must be approved by the Manager of Networking and Telecommunications, and be authorized by their department head.
