Get a jump start on better health at Feb. 6 Community Health Screening; free flu shots provided

Jan. 24, 2014

If you’ve resolved to improve your health this year, but have no insurance or limited access to medical care, attend a free Community Health Screening event Thursday, Feb. 6, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 707 W. Fort St., in Boise.

Faculty and student clinicians from the Idaho State University-Meridian Health Science Center will administer the services, including flu shots and other basic screening services.

“It’s not too late to protect yourself against the flu because this year has been another deadly year.  It’s also never too late to make healthy resolutions. We can help identify areas of concern in multiple health areas,” said Dr. Glenda Carr, screening co-organizer and an ISU-Meridian assistant clinical pharmacy professor.

Services include:

  • Blood pressure checks and medication reviews
  • Dental evaluations
  • Depression and alcohol screenings and questionnaires
  • On-site testing for blood sugar levels, cholesterol, HIV and Hepatitis C
  • Hearing and eye screenings
  • Nutrition assessment and recommendations
  • Health education

The flu vaccine will inoculate against strains identified in the Treasure Valley this season, including H1N1, said Carr.

The full screening process takes about 90 minutes, once the screening process has begun. No appointment is necessary. Valley Ride bus stops are nearby. For more information, call 373-1700 or email healthyU@isu.edu.

The Community Health Screening Program has served approximately 700 adults since it began in March 2010. It’s sponsored by Idaho State University-Meridian Health Science Center, Ada County, Central District Health, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
