Colloquium Title: Anisotropic Surface Energies

Abstract: Anisotropic surface energies are used to model the interface between immiscible materials when at least one of the materials is in an ordered phase (e.g. crystal, liquid crystal). This talk will discuss the determination of the geometry of such an interface. The talk is aimed at a general audience and will concentrate on motivation.

Recent joint work with Wenxiang Zhu on anisotropic surface flow will also be discussed.
